Artificially generatedPeter Thiel, the CIA, and why you are about to run your own secret service
Business, intelligence agencies and AI are the same craft: collect, fuse, act. Agents need an agency.
CIA means Central Intelligence Agency. Agency comes from agent. An agent acts for someone else. An agency is the organization that runs agents. Central means a master in the middle. Intelligence means knowing before the other side moves. Put AI agents where the humans sat, and you have the blueprint for what firms, states and soon private people are building. Peter Thiel sold Palantir to the CIA on that blueprint. You get the kit version. This gets big. And it gets fun.
CIA is not magic. It is an org chart in four Latin chunks.
From Latin agere, to do. Someone who acts, often on a brief. Human spy, software process, estate agent: the same grammar.
The office that holds agents. A fleet is not yet a service. Only the organization turns lone operators into an agency.
Not IQ. Situation: collect, weigh, pass on, before the other side moves. Business intelligence stole the word because it is the same thing, without a warrant.
A hub. Many agents with no middle are noise. A middle with no agents is a blog. The CIA has both in the name.
The Central Intelligence Agency, founded 1947, National Security Act, is the ultimate agent-management organization. A central intelligent node runs a fleet of agents. Call the node a master agent. Call the fleet AI. Call the whole thing your CIA. The joke sits in the etymology, not in a film.
A firm that does not know what the market will do before the market does it is blind. A service that does not know the same thing is dead.
Collect. Fuse. Act. That is Palantir, that is a hedge fund, that is a newsroom, that is a CIA station. The difference is the monopoly on violence and the warrant, not the pipeline. Anyone who glues customer data, supply chains, prices and rumours into a picture is running intelligence. The slide says CRM, BI, OSINT, alpha. The verb is the same.
AI shortens the loop. A software agent fetches, weighs, writes, books. You used to need departments. Now you need prompts, tools, permissions, a memory. That is why business and secret services move together: not because founders play spies, because the tools become identical. Bilawal Sidhu's globe stacks public signals on an Earth In-Q-Tel already bought for Iraq in 2003. Same mesh, different customers.
"A great company is a conspiracy to change the world."
Peter Thiel, Zero to One, 2014, page 83 of the Crown edition. Under 15 words, so verbatim. Conspiracy here is not tinfoil. It means a small group shares a secret the outside does not believe, and builds until it no longer needs to be secret. "So who do you tell? Whoever you need to, and no more." The company is the golden mean between nobody and everybody.
Stealth is the operating mode. You plan something large in private, you ship it, you come out when the lead is real. Thiel calls that a secret: an important truth almost no one agrees with. The interview question: "What important truth do very few people agree with you on?" People who no longer believe in secrets build 1-to-n copies. People who still do go 0-to-1, quietly.
Palantir lived it. Sequoia doodles in the pitch. VCs pass. Thiel largely funds the first 30 million, Wall Street Journal. In-Q-Tel puts in about 2 million and opens doors to analysts. Years without a household name, then ICE, the Pentagon, the IPO. The secrecy was not a PR gag. It was conspiracy in Thiel's sense: few who know, a plan, a world that looks different after.
What you can take without becoming Thiel: tell the people who have to build. Do not tell the feed. A master agent everyone can see is no longer an agent. An agency that posts its picture of the situation on LinkedIn has no picture.
The same pipeline that finds terror networks finds neighbours.
Palantir builds ICM for ICE, 41 million dollars, The Intercept 2017, from public award data. Fusion does not care what the target is. Thiel funds the case that takes Gawker apart. That is legal, and it is a conspiracy with lawyers instead of code. Christopher Soghoian: Palantir ships policing systems, the state can switch them off. The switch is a hope, not an architecture.
When everyone gets a CIA, the good guys are not the only buyers. The fun of your own agency has a bill: if the fleet treats people as a query type, you have crossed Sidhu's line. "People are not a query type here." That holds for the globe, and it should hold for your master agent. Stealth protects the plan. It does not protect the people the plan hits.
The CIA started a VC in 1999 because Langley could not build fast enough.
In-Q-Tel, September 1999, named after Bond's Q. Job: close the gap between Washington and the Valley. Fortune 2025: more than 800 companies, 32 in the NatSec 100, more than any other fund. February 2003: investment in Keyhole. NIMA uses EarthViewer in Iraq. Google buys Keyhole in October 2004. In 2005 the thing is called Google Earth. The same sphere Sidhu stacks OSINT on in 2026.
Palantir 2003/2004: PayPal fraud detection pointed at terror networks. Thiel: after 9/11 the US drifts toward fewer liberties and no real protection. The answer is supposed to be software that keeps the state sharp and legal. WSJ 2009: In-Q-Tel about 2 million plus access to analysts, two years of iteration on their requirements. First full CIA job in 2008, New York Times 2014. The CIA was not the only customer. It was the door.
Lesson: whoever sees the powerful's picture better gets bought. Whoever sees everyone's picture better becomes a product. Keyhole took the second road, Palantir the first, God's Eye View tries a third: MIT client, public data, you plug in your source.
One agent is cute. A fleet with no middle is chaos. An agency is the joke, and the joke is serious.
Fig. An agency. The hub plans. The satellites act. That is the CIA name, minus the yellow boxes.
You need a master agent that runs the fleet. A central intelligent agent that steers the other intelligent agents. In sum: a Central Intelligence Agency. Not the one in Langley. Yours. The grammar is identical. The hardware is a laptop. The agents are models plus tools plus permissions.
Without stealth this is a demo. With Thiel's rule (tell whoever you need, build large, show late) it becomes a service. Without a line against person-queries it becomes a militia. The three sentences belong together. If you only want the fun, you get chapter 04's hell for free.
Five sentences you can put in a company or in an agency.
Collect, fuse, then act. AI shortens the loop, it does not replace it. Whoever posts to the feed first has no intelligence.
Thiel: whoever needs it, and no one else. A conspiracy in the startup sense is coordination in private until the thing carries.
Many agents with no hub are tabs. A hub with no agents is an essay. Agency means both.
Business intelligence has no warrant. The moment your agency aims at people as targets, you are not being Thiel-funny, you are the state without a state.
In-Q-Tel bought access. Sidhu hands you the client. What you plug in decides whether this is a newsroom or a reticle.
We are all about to have our own secret service. That is the forecast, and yes, this is going to be a lot of fun.
Not because everyone wants to be Bond. Because the cost of an agency has fallen through the floor. A central agent that runs research, code, watch, writing, brokerage was a ministry in 1947. In 2026 it is a repo plus keys plus discipline. Palantir stays expensive because fusion sits behind an NDA. The rest of the org chart gets cheap.
You call it Central because someone has to plan. You call it Intelligence because the picture comes before the post. You call it Agency because a fleet with no office is a chat. You keep it stealth until it carries. You keep people out of the query. Then you have your secret service. Then you are allowed to enjoy the fact that the CIA already took the name, and you need it anyway.
