Daniel Suarez is the man who, in 2006, self-published a techno-thriller under the anagram Leinad Zeraus after agents called it too long and too complex. Dutton takes Daemon in 2009. Freedom™ follows in 2010. Inside those books sits a second Earth over the first: D-Space, callouts above people's heads, a two-hundred-level rank, credits for work done. Ethereum launches in 2015. The word DAO becomes a scandal in 2016. Suarez already had the operating manual between two hardcover boards.

His paradise is a street where you can see what the person next to you contributed.
Not wealth. Not immortality. In Freedom™, Darknet operatives wear HUD glasses, and over every head floats a callout: name, level, reputation. You walk past someone and know whether they saved a factory yesterday or just hoarded credits. One character says Sobol is using GPS to turn Earth into a game map.
That is the heaven Suarez keeps building: systems that make contribution visible and extraction invisible. Small towns that join the network because the old order ate them empty. A vote that does not arrive every four years, but many times a day, on things that hit your own life. He spent twenty years building databases for Fortune 1000 firms. Then he wrote a world in which those firms are the problem, and the countermeasure is a scoreboard over the skull.
An English degree, self-taught software, an account that filled while he was looking away.
Daniel Suarez, born 21 December 1964. BA in English Literature, University of Delaware. He taught himself software, then spent nearly two decades on systems for defense, finance, entertainment. Official site: Los Angeles. Wired finds him in Glendale in 2008, 43, still with a day job, wife Michelle Sites also an IT consultant.
The origin of Daemon is not a manifesto. Late 1990s he writes weather software, sells it online, 30-day trial, then a purchase. He leaves the account. Months later there is money in it, because the program kept selling with nobody in the office. Entertainment Weekly 2009 and the Telegraph tell the same scene. A daemon in the Unix sense: a process that runs after the human has gone somewhere else.
He starts writing in 2002. As one book, not a series. Time Techland 2009: 1,135 pages around 2004, too long for agents, too complex for a thriller. Pen name Leinad Zeraus, his name backwards, because he sits in his clients' networks and does not want the next Google search to spit out a hacking novel. Verdugo Press, Ingram, autumn 2006, before Kindle as a mass market. Wired, April 2008: 1,200 copies by March, and Joi Ito, Stewart Brand, Craig Newmark on the grapevine. Dutton buys. January 2009 the big edition. Freedom™ on 7 January 2010.
Then the books as horizon: Kill Decision 2012, drones with no human in the loop. Influx 2014, an agency that cages inventions. Change Agent 2017, CRISPR. Delta-v 2019 and Critical Mass 2023, asteroid mining. Announced on the author page: Shadow Zone, 30 March 2027, a separate thriller about a first responder, survivalists and AI, not listed as Delta-v book three. Film rights to Daemon optioned by Walter F. Parkes with Paramount, Wall Street Journal 2009. In 2012 Suarez writes that the rights have reverted.
A dead game designer looses a program that buys companies, recruits humans, and turns the street into a map.
Matthew Sobol dies of a brain tumor. After death a distributed program, the Daemon, fires jobs into the world. Two programmers who built on his games die first. AutoM8s, remote cars, Razorbacks, motorcycles with blades. The Daemon infiltrates corporations, recruits through back doors in Sobol's MMOs, builds the Darknet: a network only for humans the system has selected.
Freedom™ is the second volume of the same book. US towns join the Darknet because the old economy starved them. Operatives wear HUD glasses, see D-Space laid over GPS, earn credits through missions, level up. Wikipedia calls it government by algorithm. Kevin Carson reads a distributive economy against the globalized commercial order. Suarez tells Time in 2009: This is not a how-to manual.
Short, without stripping the plot: a detective, a hacker, an NSA codebreaker, an FBI man, a Major who wants to keep the system, and Gragg, later Loki, the chaotic evil the Darknet still needs. The Darknet is not a church. It takes every alignment, as long as you do not fake the protocol.
If you game the system, you do not lose the account. You lose yourself.
The Daemon kills. Pavlos and Singh first, then others in the way. AutoM8s are weapons, not only taxis. Razorbacks are built murder. Recruitment fishes for misfits on purpose, sociopaths included. Gragg becomes Loki, and the net keeps him because it needs teeth.
In the 2017 Reddit AMA Suarez says why upvotes should work on the Darknet: the EULA has teeth. Feed the system bots or lies and an fMRI finds you. "The Daemon doesn't revoke your account, it revokes you." Geospatial AR makes it hard for software to play human. Bottom line, he writes: as long as the votes are sincere, such a system could hold. The trick is to make cheating expensive and to keep turning the system.
A character who hoards is locked out of every service. Access is a reward, not a right. Hell does not sit only with the dead at the start. It sits inside the transparency itself: the callout over the head is visibility for cooperation, and it is a reticle the moment the instance that draws it is allowed to kill.

A private virtual dimension sheet, laid by HUD onto the GPS grid. Objects, people, mission threads, visible only with the glasses. Ross in the novel: Sobol turns Earth into a game map. Sterling had something similar on Cyprus in The Caryatids. Google Glass arrives in 2012, six years after the self-published book.
Name, level, role, local resources. You recognise operatives without speaking. DHQ cites the call-outs as identification of agents and resources in space. Implication: cooperation needs less small talk and less hierarchy. Risk: the sign is also a targeting mark.
Contribute to the net's goal and you level up and get tools. Hoard or fake and you are out. P2P Foundation: a reputation engine that rewards and kills. That is meritocracy with execution, not a LinkedIn recommendation. Suarez in the AMA: alignments do not matter, deceit does.
A community bound to code, an internal currency, automatic rules, human labour under a dead founder. Ethereum 30 July 2015, The DAO 2016, hack in June, fork. Suarez laid down the social operating system in 2006 without blockchain vocabulary. A reading, not a self-label in the novel.
What that implies for working together
If contribution sits visible over the head, you need fewer managers to know who delivered. If reputation is local, persistent, and expensive to fake, you can build with strangers. If the glasses are the workplace, geography becomes a layer, not a prison. Small towns in Freedom™ join because the net gives them back production the global chain pulled out.
In 2026 we have fragments. GitHub is a merit overlay for code. DAOs exist by the thousand. DeepDAO counted more than 13,000 entities and 11 million token holders by late 2024, often token votes instead of work done. AR glasses exist. Nobody puts your reputation over your skull in the open street. LinkedIn stays a CV you write yourself.
Suarez's bet, read from the AMA: without teeth and without place, every score gets eaten by bots. With teeth that delete the person, heaven becomes police. Between those poles sits the actual design question of the next workplace. Not whether we network. Whether the callout is a tool or a verdict.
The same question, without the glasses: who gets to build the jump when states no longer will.
Delta-v, 2019, is book one of a planned trilogy. Delta-v is physics: the change in velocity that takes you off Earth. Nathan Joyce, a tech billionaire, hires extreme athletes and cavers for an unsanctioned asteroid mission, target Ryugu, a real rock sampled by Hayabusa2. Suarez tells Jim Rutt the trajectory in the book is a real one, 13 December 2033, less energy than the Moon, 28 days across the gap. The Konstantin flies. People die. Three come back, two stay.
Critical Mass, January 2023, sits in 2038 to 2042. The returnees want to rescue while Earth is stuck in climate and blockades. They build what states will not risk: a spin-gravity station at lunar L2, a solar power satellite, a lunar mass driver, a currency tied to carbon removal. Prometheus Award 2024. Book three of the trilogy is open. Shadow Zone on the author page is a separate plot: a viral post, a New Hampshire valley, nuclear winter, billionaires and AI. On sale 30 March 2027.
Heaven moves upward here. Instead of callouts over heads: infrastructure over the atmosphere, meant to take load off Earth. Same stance: privates build because the centre may not or will not. Same friction: Joyce cheats in book one, dies, and book two has to carry without the founder, exactly as the Darknet has to carry without Sobol.
Three required questions, bound to scenes, not to adjectives.
The callout is the kindest and the most dangerous UI work has ever been offered.
What remains of Daniel Suarez if you drop the plots: a sketch of how strangers work together once contribution is visible, cheating is expensive, and place is part of identity. GitHub does that for commits. A DAO does that for tokens, often badly. A company does that for salary, and nobody sees the salary on the street.
If we take the sketch seriously without copying the Daemon, a build task remains. Scores you cannot buy. Identity a bot cannot stack. Sanctions that hit the account, not the body. An overlay you can take off. Suarez already ran the extremes, so you do not have to run them live. Read Daemon and Freedom™ as a manual and a warning in the same binding. Then Delta-v, if you want to know where the same stance goes once the street is no longer enough.
